Recycling and sorting centres: “The government is making the right choices.” -Maryse Vermette, CEO
Yesterday, the government of Québec tabled a budget that includes $100 million to improve waste management. More specifically, the measures aim to:
- modernize sorting centres, especially for glass and plastic;
- lead technological innovation to increase the quality of the materials and their outlets;
- support packaging ecodesign initiatives;
- provide more recovery equipment in public spaces
“In prioritizing these measures, the government has proven, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that it fully understands the most important issues for Québec’s curbside recycling system as a whole. It is making the right choices, and this is very encouraging for the future,” affirmed Maryse Vermette, president and chief executive officer, Éco Entreprises Québec (ÉEQ).
Note that ÉEQ recently released a report on the Innovative Glass Works plan, whose key recommendations propose to modernize sorting centres and invest in the development of new markets—the solution to recycling 100% of the glass collected through curbside recycling in Québec.
