End of 2013 reporting, expected start of 2014 reporting
As indicated in ÉEQ’s 2013 Schedule of Contributions, Tuesday, July 8, 2014 will be the deadline for submitting 2013 Company Reports. Companies will have until July 26, 2014, to make their 1st installment, i.e. 80% of the total contribution due in accordance with this Schedule of Contributions. We also expect the 2014 Schedule of Contributions to come into effect around July 2, 2014. ÉEQ therefore suggests that contributing companies start now to gather information on the quantities of materials they put on Quebec’s market between January 1st and December 31, 2013.

 As a major partner in UQAM’s Packplay Project, ÉEQ supports innovative packaging design
ÉEQ is pleased to be associated with the Packplay Project set up by prof. Sylvain Allard from UQAM’s École de design. On the 10th anniversary of UQAM’s Packaging Program, Mr. Allard invited eight other international design schools to participate in this contest to support research and innovation in packaging design that puts special focus on the environment and the consumer. Well aware that optimizing packaged products not only has a positive effect on the performance of the curbside recycling system but also produces economic and environmental benefits for companies, ÉEQ is drawing on its expertise in the ecodesign of containers, packaging and printed matter to encourage tomorrow’s designers in taking up the environmental challenge.

 ÉEQ’s website is getting a facelift!
ÉEQ’s new and improved website now provides enhanced content and simplified browsing in order to help you get the maximum amount of information. In the interest of providing contributing companies, municipalities and stakeholders active in Quebec’s curbside recycling value chain with a user-friendly reference and guidance tool, ÉEQ’s site contains everything it had before, and more. By highlighting initiatives to optimize the system, ÉEQ is fulfilling one of its most important roles.

 Youth become ambassadors of curbside recycling in Quebec
Through its two initiatives, specifically the Away-from-Home Recovery Program and the bacs+ group, ÉEQ partenered with the Regroupement des maisons de jeunes du Québec (RMJQ) on May 24, 2014, to launch the Curbside Recycling Ambassadors Program. The program is designed to enhance curbside recycling outside the home and, by mobilizing our youth, raise awareness about the social benefits of doing so.

 Agreement with the Carton Council of Canada
ÉEQ recently concluded an agreement with the Carton Council of Canada. The first of its kind for ÉEQ, this agreement will lead to cooperation on initiatives to optimize the value chain, increase the quantities and quality of recovered materials and support players in the curbside recycling involved in processing multi-layer cardboard.

 ÉEQ was the big winner in the Innovation category of this corporate citizenship competition!
Yesterday, Éco Entreprises Québec proudly accepted 1st prize in the Innovation category for its OptimEco.ca portal as part of Novae’s Entreprises citoyennes competition. OptimEco.ca is the 1st packaging optimization portal in Canada that, in the spirit of extended producer responsibility relating to containers, packaging and printed matter, provides guidance and tools to manufacturers, designers or distributors of packaging materials. OptimEco.ca helps generate economic and environmental benefits for companies and the entire curbside recycling system, particularly by reducing packaging at the source and using more recyclable materials.

 ÉEQ was at the Salon de l’UMQ
On May 21 and 22, 2014, ÉEQ participated in the Salon des affaires municipales organized by the Union des municipalités du Québec (UMQ) in order to meet with mayors and councillors to talk about initiatives that would ensure the continuous improvement of municipal curbside recycling programs. In addition to promoting the financial contributions companies make, ÉEQ had an opportunity to showcase the Best Practices Initiative for curbside recycling, which consists in regional workshops that stimulate discussion with municipalities throughout Quebec, and the Away-from-Home Recovery Program, which provides financial assistance for the purchase of recovery equipment intended for public places.

ÉEQ contributes to the optimization of the curbside recycling value chain by implementing innovative initiatives. For example, the OptimEco.ca portal, which was recently awarded a Novae corporate citizenship prize, provides companies with strategies for ecodesigning and reducing packaging at the source. Another initiative is our association with youth centres to create the all-new Curbside Recycling Ambassadors Program, which will be managed by the Away-from-Home Recovery Program. Thanks to a $700,000 budget, this unique program will enable young people throughout Quebec to design projects that increase materials recovery in municipal public places.
