 We celebrated ÉEQ’s 10 years of success and vision for the future of curbside recycling at our recent Annual General Assembly. A look back on our first decade reveals our companies’ exceptional contribution to the success of curbside recycling thanks to the almost $1 billion they paid into the system. Our commitment, however, goes far beyond financing. Working in the interest of contributing companies and all Quebecers, we are endeavouring to optimize curbside recycling and make its future brighter than ever. We invite our partners to continue their efforts in developing a business model that ensures not only a better quality/price ratio, but also maximum economic, social and environmental benefits, which are the three pillars of sustainable development. Innovation and investments are also part and parcel of this business model… and we’re working on all them!

 10 YEARS OF SOLUTIONS THAT MATTER – ÉEQ’S ANNUAL GENERAL ASSEMBLY
On April 24, contributing company representatives in attendance listened to our report on the past year’s work and events, including a revision of the fee structure, the Reporting Optimization Initiative, the Forum on Curbside Recycling Optimization and the Best Practices Initiative for Effective Curbside Recycling. The 10th anniversary of our certification by RECYC-QUÉBEC was also an opportunity to measure the progress achieved, particularly the 5 million tonnes of recyclable materials recovered since 2005 and the 2 million tonnes of greenhouse gases avoided. It should be noted that, today, Quebec’s recycling industry provides 10,000 jobs and $4.7 billion in economic benefits. Quebec’s curbside recycling efforts are already a great success. To do even better, we must work together to build a solid and more sustainable business model to ensure further progress. We know that our partners are as dedicated as we are to attaining that objective!

 NEW CURBSIDE RECYCLING VALUE CHAIN EXPERTS ON ÉEQ’S BOARD
ÉEQ’s new General By-laws, adopted in April 2014, have taken effect. From now on, ÉEQ’s Board of Directors will be made up of 10 member Directors and 4 non-member Directors. A specialized consulting firm was hired to help select the latter based on their professional experience as well as their contribution to the development of the curbside recycling value chain and knowledge of sustainable development issues. We therefore extend a warm welcome to Michel Camirand, President & CEO of Groupe RCM, Johnny Izzi, CEO of Groupe Gaudreau, Ginette Pellerin, CEO of 3R MCDQ, and Pierre Renaud, Legal Counsel and Group Leader, Environmental Law, McCarthy Tétrault S.E.N.C.R.L. We also wish to express our heartfelt appreciation to outgoing Directors Sylvie Cloutier, Florent Gravel, Jean Lefebvre and Alain Charron for their contribution to ÉEQ’s transformation from contribution collector to optimizer. They will remain close collaborators.

 RESPONSIBLE CONSUMPTION: A PACKAGE DEAL
This year, our Annual General Assembly continued with Fabien Durif, co-founder and Director of the UQAM ESG’s Responsible Consumption Observatory, who gave a presentation on what Quebec consumers expect with regard to eco-responsible packaging. Close to 90% of Quebecers believe that we should rethink our lifestyles and consumption habits. Adopting new habits is a progressive and consistent effort. By opting for eco-responsible packaging, companies respond to consumers’ growing concerns about the environment, cement product loyalty and attract new customers.  ÉEQ’S STATEMENT ON A PROPOSED BAN ON PLASTIC SHOPPING BAGS
Many countries have adopted or are considering the adoption of measures to ban single-use plastic shopping bags. Montréal Mayor Denis Coderre said he was in favour of the ban. That issue will be the subject of consultations in early June before the City of Montréal’s Commission sur l’eau, l’environnement, le développement durable et les grands parcs. ÉEQ intends to submit a statement reminding everyone about the efficiency of voluntary measures. Indeed, the 2010 Voluntary Code of Best Practices on the Use of Shopping Bags developed by ÉEQ, the Association des détaillants en alimentation du Québec, the Canadian Council of Grocery Distributors, the Conseil québécois du commerce de détail and RECYC-QUÉBEC resulted in a 52% drop in the use of such bags in 2012, which was better by 2% and two years earlier than government objectives.

 RECYC-QUÉBEC’S LATEST PUBLIC AWARENESS CAMPAIGN: THIS IS NOT A CONTAINER, PACKAGING OR PRINTED MATTER
RECYC-QUÉBEC’s extensive public awareness campaign under the theme “This is not a container, packaging or printed matter” is newly airing on TV and has been running in Quebec daily and weekly newspapers since December 8, 2014. The objective is to make clear what, and especially what not, to place in recycling bins, in order to improve the quality of materials collected. ÉEQ commends RECYC-QUÉBEC for this ad campaign to reinforce good habits by emphasizing that only containers, packaging and printed matter should be placed in recycling bin. The campaign will continue not only in newspapers until mid-May, but also in radio, web and TV clips until mid-June. The campaign is part of a government commitment to reduced quantities of orphan materials placed in recycling bins following representations by ÉEQ and its partners.

 ÉEQ PARTNERS WITH TRI-LOGIQUE, A NEW PROGRAM TO PROMOTE SOUND RESIDUAL MATERIALS MANAGEMENT
ÉEQ is pleased to be a major partner of Tri-logique, a new initiative by Réseau Environnement. Tri-logique will provide the public with tools and information on recycling best practices at home and at the office. The program also offers communication tools on the principles and application of the 3Rs (reduce, reuse, recycle). Residual materials sorting (whether they are destined for recycling, the trash heap, compost, eco-centre, etc.) can be an easy and logical daily habit once we know the facts. This program is another initiative, and solution, to reduce the quantities of orphan materials placed in recycling bins – a crucial problem that needs to be resolved.

 BEST PRACTICES INITIATIVE GOING STRONG THROUGHOUT QUEBEC
 Increasingly popular in the municipal sector, the Best Practices Initiative for Effective Curbside Recycling is going strong throughout Quebec. Over the past few weeks, we have met with dozens of municipal representatives in the Outaouais, Laurentides, Saguenay-Lac-St-Jean and Montérégie regions to share information on issues and successes achieved locally and throughout Quebec.

MATERIALS RECOVERY IS NOW 10,000 TIMES EASIER
 In 2008, the Away-from-Home Recovery Program made its first contribution to the City of Lévis to purchase and install 88 recovery containers in municipal public places. On April 28, 2015, dignitaries from the same city joined us to highlight the installation of the 10,000th bin financed by the program. Since the program was first launched, more than $4.7 million was paid to more than half of all Quebec municipalities to reach that symbolic number. “The ultimate program objective is to create the largest away-from-home recovery network in North America”, said Jean-Luc Plant, ÉEQ’s Vice-President, Optimization. |

 PACKAGING ECODESIGN: FINAL PART OF A SERIES OF ARTICLES IN SAVOIR D’AFFAIRES
Last March, an article on packaging ecodesign wrapped up an 8-part report published in Les Affaires. Thanks to this partnership, the business community is now better-informed about curbside recycling financing, ecodesign as a strategic lever, using innovation as a raw material and, finally, packaging ecodesign. These write-ups can now be used as references for people who need factual information about curbside recycling… and ÉEQ.

 30TH GALA ARTIS: A MEMORABLE EVENING FOR ÉEQ SPOKESPERSON ÉRIC SALVAILÉric Salvail will always remember April 26, 2015, as the day the public expressed its great appreciation for his talent. He accomplished an impressive feat with wins in two categories: best variety and entertainment show host and best cultural magazine and talk-show host. The esteem the public bestowed on ÉEQ’s new spokesperson is also good for the organization, as the goodwill he inspires will extend to curbside recycling and ÉEQ itself. Adding to his home-run, Éric announced two days later that we would host NRJ radio’s afternoon rush-hour show this fall. We wish him the best!
