As the holidays draw near, another busy year at ÉEQ is coming to a close, both in terms of the application of the compensation plan and the optimization of curbside recycling.

Our Innovative Glass Works plan, which was launched in January 2016 with funding from the organizations that ÉEQ represents, will make it possible to advance a concrete solution for all the glass collected through curbside recycling. Moreover, on November 14, we announced the names of the five sorting centres that were selected to take part in pilot projects to test glass sorting and cleaning technologies so that the material may then be used as a component in various products and ecomaterials. 

In addition, we recognize the efforts invested by our team of experts working to optimize municipal curbside recycling programs through the activities of the Best Practices Initiative, which has led us to meet with driven municipal officials from across Québec, and the work carried out by our ecodesign experts, who helped several businesses that sought to design responsible packaging options.

With regard to the compensation plan, 2016 was marked by the adoption of the three Schedules of Contributions, including the 2017 Schedule of Contributions that was approved by our board of directors and submitted to RECYC-QUÉBEC this month. Next year will prove challenging for contributing organizations since several payments will be required throughout the year for the 2015, 2016 and 2017 Schedules of Contributions. In this regard, ÉEQ will do its utmost to support businesses in their financial responsibility.   
 
Heading into 2017, ÉEQ has just been reaccredited by RECYC-QUÉBEC, with which we have renewed our partnership in a spirit of openness, transparency and collegiality.

Finally, I would like to thank the contributing organizations, as well as all of those who collaborate with us to optimize Québec’s curbside recycling system. On behalf of the entire ÉEQ team and our board of directors, I would like to extend our warmest wishes for this holiday season.

The 2017 Schedule of Contributions adopted by ÉEQ’s BOD
With only a few days left in 2016, we would like to sincerely thank all the organizations for their ongoing participation, which is essential to the success of the compensation plan.

We are also pleased to announce that the report (draft Schedule of Contributions) on the consultations with businesses and organizations and, since December 9, the 2017 Schedule of Contributions have both been adopted by ÉEQ’s board of directors and continue to move forward according to the following steps to set out the Schedule of Contributions.

  

 

  
Following the consultation meetings, the members of the BOD agreed to modify the contribution table: PVC was removed from the other plastics and grouped with the expanded polystyrene, non-expanded polystyrene and PLA rates. The decision was made after several curbside recycling keyplayers identified PVC as a problematic material. The materials rates were then updated based on this adjustment and recent reporting data.

Finally, it is important to note that the deadline to make your second payment for the 2015 Schedule of Contributions is January 13, 2017. Please refer to the following table to know the deadlines for the 2015, 2016 and 2017 Schedules of Contribution.

Tricentris nominated at the GreenTec Awards

Tricentris, which manufactures the VERROX glass powder developed from recycled glass from curbside recycling, is a finalist at the 2017 GreenTec Awards—a prestigious international competition. Click here to vote to support the organization’s nomination.
   
  
Université de Montréal students lend their creativity to ÉEQ
As part of a friendly competition, student teams from the Faculty of Environmental Design at Université de Montréal submitted concepts for an ÉEQ booth. The winning idea is an immersive stand that highlights the innovative applications of recycled glass.

ÉEQ’s outreach
ÉEQ was especially active in promoting its expertise as well as sharing best practices at various events and in a series of publications this fall. Here are some of the highlights.

– October 1: Mathieu Guillemette led a workshop on the Best Practices Initiative, the Away-from-Home program and the Innovative Glass Works plan at the Salon affaires municipales organized by the Fédération québécoise des municipalités (FQM). Other colleagues hosted an information booth on ÉEQ’s programs.

– October 13: Virginie Bussières, director of Communications and Public Affairs  discussed the relationship between citizens, their recycling bins and the curbside recycling at the Colloque sur la gestion des matières résiduelles organized by Réseau Environnement.

– October 14: Ecodesign consultant Geneviève Dionne presented ecodesign from the circular perspective at CYCLE 2016, a forum organized by the CIRAIG at Polytechnique Montréal.

– October 27: Jean-Luc Plante, vice-president, Optimization presented the Innovative Glass Works plan at the Innovations en valorisation des matières résiduelles seminar.

– November 8 : ÉEQ CEO Maryse Vermette took part in a conference with Steve Whettingsteel of Krysteline Technologies and Virginie Bussières, director of Communications and Public Affairs at ÉEQ, spoke on a panel on glass recycling at the Southeast Recycling Development Council Summit in Atlanta.

ÉEQ and the ADGMQ
The municipal DGs are ÉEQ’s key partners. In December, Mathieu Guillemette and André Fortin of ÉEQ had the opportunity to present at two events: the meeting of the BOD of the Association des directeurs généraux des municipalités du Québec (ADGMQ) and the Conférence des DG de l’agglomération de Montréal. They touched upon topics including the Best Practices Initiative and curbside recycling and the prospects of the Innovative Glass Works plan for municipalities.

Éco Entreprises Québec (ÉEQ) is the organization that develops the Schedule of Contributions and collects company contributions, which are then redistributed to finance municipal curbside recycling services in Quebec. ÉEQ also encourages innovation and sharing of best practices in order to optimize the recyclable materials value chain. To do so, ÉEQ cooperates, on the one hand, with companies to reduce quantities of materials at the source and encourage the use of recyclable materials, as well as with municipalities to increase recycling and the economic value of recovered materials.

ÉEQ is a private non-profit organization created by companies that put containers, packaging and printed matter on Quebec’s market to represent them. The organization was accredited by RECYC-QUÉBEC in 2005 in accordance with the Environment Quality Act.
